EKOKNITWEAR

Crafting knitwear inspired by nature

Our Story

Somerset has a rich history of producing sheep wool for the textile industry. It still is one of UK’s largest wool producing counties.   During the Middle Ages sheep farming for the wool trade dominated the economy of Exmoor.  Taunton was the centre for the wool trade from 1219 for the entire south west of England.

The wool was spun into thread on isolated farms and collected by merchants to be woven, fulled, dyed and finished in thriving towns such as Dunster –  not far from us. In the mid 17thcentury a group of women in Street introduced knitting to Somerset.

Sheep wool is a wonderful renewable and sustainable natural resource that currently only achieves second place (to acrylic) in the fashion industry. Here at EKOKNITWEAR we intend to introduce knitted garments from British wool and other natural fibres to the fashion industry.

We are the first company to establish a modern forward facing and sustainable commercial knitting enterprise in the south west of England. We will be reintroducing and reinforcing the UK’s unique heritage with our latest cutting edge state of the art technology through our Shima Seiki knitting machines and 3D virtual design imaging. Our process is 100% ecofriendly ethical sustainable and most importantly good for our planet.
